Continuing Education
Information
Veterinarians are
required to have 20 hours of continuing education credits annually.
Veterinary Technicians are required to have 12 hours of continuing education credits every two years. Based on year of Registration.
Three hours of
computer based training concerning the practice veterinary medicine will be
accepted during a renewal cycle, this is in accordance with Administrative Code
.0206 (4). The Board does not accept correspondence styled programs for
continuing education credits.
Continuing
education credits not obtained during the current calendar year will incur a
$50.00 penalty and may delay the renewal of the license or registration.
University/College
Internships programs will have to have prior Board approval before being used
as continuing education credit. Written Information and documentation on the
program should be submitted to the Board office.
Continuing education credit extension request may be granted if the Individual can provide evidence of an incapacitating illness or evidence of other circumstance which constituted a severe and verifiable hardship. That to comply with the continuing education requirement would have been impossible or unreasonably burdensome. A written request for an extension of time to satisfy the continuing education requirement needs to be submitted to the Board office as quickly as possible. Not all request for extension of time is granted.
A letter to the
Board office as soon as possible for review is required. The letter will need
to state the incapacitating illness or evidence of other severe and verifiable
circumstance. Some extension request may require to be reviewed by the full
Board, during it's next meeting.

Information for Providers
seeking pre-approval for Continuing Education.
Providers of continuing
education should request pre-approval of presentations for credit. Information
on presentations need to be submitted by mail a minimum 7 day prior to the
presentation date. Please note that not all continuing education programs can
be approved for credit.
Providers seeking pre-approval
for credit must provide an agenda or outline which includes presentation start
and stop times, speaker names, location, and title & topic to be presented.
Topics must be related to the practice of veterinary medicine. Mailing
information for provider will also need to be submitted.
Continuing education credit is
based on 1 hour (60 minutes) of lecture, wet-lab, laboratory, etc., attended.
The Board does not approve attendance to exhibit halls.
The Board can only approve
computer based training presentations pertaining to the practice of veterinary
medicine for up to 3 hours of continuing education credit.
Providers are required to
present each individual who has completed the presentation with a certificate
showing the number of credit hours as approved by the N.C. Board. Failure to do
so can result in approval of presentation to be withdrawn. Approval of future
programs also depends on complying with Board requirements. Should any changes
be made to the continuing education presentation, the Board will need to have prior
notification in writing of those changes.
