Fee is $150.00 Make check or money order payable to the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board (NCVMB).

 

The Veterinary State Examination is a written exam on the General Statutes and Administrative Rules governing the practice of veterinary medicine in North Carolina. The exam contains 70 true/false and 30 multiple choice questions. A copy of the North Carolina Practice Act on the General Statutes and Administrative Rules, with a Seating Pass is mailed to each applicant approximately thirty days prior to the requested examination. The Seating Pass mailed to each applicant contains an I.D. needed to gain entrance to the examination and information on time and location of examination.

 

Documentation includes a completed application, including passport photo, and copy of Social Security card for consideration as part of the North Carolina veterinary licensure process under the General Statutes and Administrative Code of North Carolina . All credentials/documentation will need to be received in the Board office seven days prior to the examination date or applicant will not be eligible for the examination. It is the applicants responsibility to request all credentials/documentation, as well as provide current telephone numbers, address, or other information changes in writing to the Board office. Disclosure of information is mandated. However, failure to comply may result in the application not being processed. Application or fees are not refundable or transferable to another examination date.

 

The Board office provides updates to the status of an applicant's file by mail. These updates are sent at regular intervals, as documentation is recieved, until the file has been completed.

Applicants file must be completed seven days prior to the examination date. If documentation is not complete, applicant will not be eligible for the examination date applied for and would be required to apply for another examination.

or for $3.00 from the Board office.

 

 

 

New Graduates and Individuals practicing under five years

 

1.    An applicant is required to have graduated before the date of examination being requested. This means that all course work has been completed and the veterinary degree awarded.

2.      Submitted with application copy of Social Security Card and passport photo . Social Security Card disclosure is mandated by N.C.G.S. 110-142, et. seq.

3.    Have on file with the N.C. Board degree conferred transcript. Mailed directly from college/school of veterinary medicine to Board office. Degree conferred transcript must be on file with Board office seven days before desired examination date.

4.    Have on file with the N.C. Board a score of 425 or higher for the NAVLE. Accepted only from AAVSB.

5.    Have on file with the N.C. Board license verification from each State you hold or held a veterinary license in. Mailed directly from those states to Board office.

6.      4th year students have on file with N.C. Board Deans letter of intent to graduate sent from College/School. Dean's letter will need to state that all course work has been completed and the veterinary degree will be awarded. Please note Board office must receive degree conferred transcript before examination date.

7.    Have on file with the N.C. Board information concerning all disciplinary action or other issues.

8.    Graduates from non-accredited college/school of veterinary medicine have on file with the N.C. Board a letter from the AVMA stating ECFVG program has been completed to be eligible for veterinary state examination or to obtain a temporary permit certificate.

9.    Pass the written North Carolina Veterinary State Examination. Passing score of 70.

 

Individuals practicing over five years

  1. Holds an active license in another state whose requirements for licensure are substantially equivalent to those of North Carolina.
  2. Has practiced three of the last five years, is a competent practitioner in good standing with no disciplinary proceeding or unresolved complaints pending.
  3. Submitted with application copy of Social Security Card and passport photo . Social Security disclosure is mandated by N.C.G.S. 110-142, et. seq.
  4. Have on file with the N.C. Board a passing score of 425 or higher for the NBE, & CCT, or NAVLE examination. Scores accepted only from AAVSB. NBE score was required effective 1969 and both NBE & CCT Scores were required effective June 1980.
  5. Have on file with the N.C. Board degree conferred transcript. Mailed directly from college/school of veterinary medicine to Board office.
  6. Have on file with the N.C. Board license verification from each State you hold or held a veterinary license in. Mailed directly from those states to Board office.
  7. Have on file with the N.C. Board information concerning all disciplinary action or other issues.
  8. Graduates from non-accredited college/school of veterinary medicine have on file with the N.C. Board a letter from the AVMA stating ECFVG program has been completed to be eligible for veterinary state examination or to obtain a temporary permit certificate.
  9. Pass the written North Carolina State Veterinary Examination. Passing score of 70.

 

 

Information Regarding ADA Accommodations

 

Requesting special accommodations for the Veterinary State Examination must be provided to the Board office in writing at time of application. The applicant is responsible for this written submission by the application deadline for the Veterinary State Examination. Include all information concerning the disabilities and state what accommodations are being requested.

When the disability was professionally diagnosed.

How diagnosed. Describe.

Name of professional who is providing care.

Letter from Professional/Doctor that diagnosed the disability stating how the disability was diagnosed, what accommodations are being requested and how it relates to the disabilities, given that the examination is largely multiple choice and true/false questions.

What accommodations have been received relating to high school and college. Describe.

What accommodations were received, if any for the college admission test. Describe.

 

 

Individuals from Non-Accredited College/School of Veterinary Medicine

 

Must have completed the ECFVG program to be eligible for veterinary state examination or to obtain a temporary permit certificate. Required to have on file with the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board from AVMA letter stating completion of ECFVG program and other required documentation. Continuing Education Credit

 

Twenty hours of Continuing Education credit is required for license renewal each December. It must be acquired during the calendar year for renewal. Exception: Continuing Education Credit is not required if licensed in North Carolina the same year of graduation.

 

 

Temporary Permit Certificate

Fee is $30.00

A temporary permit certificate allows an individual who graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine to provide limited veterinary services under the direct supervision of North Carolina licensed veterinarians, until they sit for the next available Veterinary State Examination.

The temporary permit certificate, once issued is only valid for the designated veterinary practice listed on the application. If other practice locations are needed, separate application(s) with fees must be filed with the Board office. Applicants cannot legally practice veterinary medicine in North Carolina until he or she has been issued the temporary permit certificate.

To be eligible to obtain a temporary permit certificate, the temporary permit certificate application must be submitted 21 days before the preferred work date and before providing veterinary services. A temporary permit certificate will not be issued until all required credentials/documentation is received in the Board office. It is the applicants responsibility to request credentials/documentation. Required credentials/documentation includes

  1. Completed Veterinary State Exam application for next available exam with passport photo and fee.
  2. Copy of Social Security Card.
  3. Completed temporary permit certificate application.
  4. Official transcript with degree conferred.
  5. Passing scores for the NBE, CCT, or NAVLE.
  6. All license verifications
  7. Information concerning all disciplinary action or other issues.
  8. AVMA certificate of completion for the ECFVG program

Temporary permit certificate holders are not eligible for accreditation. Full licensure is a prerequisite before pursuing USDA, APHIS Accredited Veterinarian certification. As a result, temporary permit certificate holders can not do activities involving state or federal government regulatory work.

Such activities include issuing health certificates, drawing or submitting blood for EIA (Coggins) testing, rabies vaccination, or any other activity involving official regulatory program diseases, food animal brucellosis, tuberculosis, pseudorabies in swine, etc. Certificate holders should not be considered by anyone to be able to work independently, or operate satellite practices as would a fully licensed veterinarian.

These unauthorized activities would be in violation of state or federal laws, and could make supervising veterinarians and temporary permit certificate holders subject to disciplinary action by the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board.

Temporary permit certificates are issued by mailed, with a letter to the primary supervising veterinarian once the applicant's file has been completed.
