Requirements
for new graduates and applicants practicing under five years
1. An applicant is required to have graduated before the
date of examination being requested. This means that all course work has been completed
and the veterinary degree awarded.
2.
Graduates from
non-accredited college/school of
veterinary medicine must have completed the ECFVG program. A letter from
the AVMA will need to be on file with the N.C. Board to be eligible for
veterinary state examination or to obtain a temporary permit certificate.
3.
Have on file
with the N.C. Board a score of 425 or
higher for the NAVLE. Accepted only from AAVSB.
4.
Have on file
with the N.C. Board license verification from each State you hold or held a
veterinary license in. Mailed directly from those states to Board office.
5. 4th year students have on file with N.C. Board Deans letter of intent to graduate sent from College/School. Dean's letter will need to state that all course work has been completed and the veterinary degree will be awarded.
6.
On file with the
N.C. Board transcript with degree
conferred. Mailed directly from college/school of veterinary medicine to
Board office. Degree conferred transcript must be on file with Board office
prior to desired examination date.
7.
Have on file
with the N.C. Board copy of Social Security Card. This disclosure is mandated
by N.C.G.S. 110-142, et. seq.
8.
Pass the written
North Carolina Veterinary State Examination. Passing score of 70.

for applicants practicing over five years
Information
Regarding
Requesting special
accommodations for the Veterinary State Examination must be provided to the Board
office in writing at time of application. The applicant is responsible for this
written submission by the application deadline for the Veterinary State
Examination. Include all information concerning the disabilities and state what
accommodations are being requested.

Graduates from Non-Accredited College/School of
Veterinary Medicine

Continuing
Education Credit
Twenty hours of Continuing
Education credit is required for license renewal each December. It must be
acquired during the calendar year prior to year of renewal. Exception:
Continuing Education Credit is not required if licensed in
Temporary Permit Certificate
Fee
is $30.00
A temporary permit certificate
allows an individual who graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine to
provide limited veterinary services under the direct supervision of North
Carolina licensed veterinarians, until they sit for the next available Veterinary
State Examination.
The temporary permit
certificate, once issued is only valid for the designated veterinary practice
listed on the application. If other practice locations are needed, separate
application(s) with fees must be filed with the Board office. Applicants cannot
legally practice veterinary medicine in North Carolina until he or she has been
issued the temporary permit certificate.
To be eligible to obtain a
temporary permit certificate, the temporary permit application must be
submitted 21 days before the preferred work date and before providing
veterinary services. A temporary permit certificate will not be issued until all
required documentation is received in the Board office. Required documentation includes
Temporary permit
certificate holders are not eligible for accreditation. Full licensure is a
prerequisite before pursuing USDA, APHIS Accredited Veterinarian certification.
As a result, temporary permit certificate holders can not do activities
involving state or federal government regulatory work.
Such activities include
issuing health certificates, drawing or submitting blood for EIA (Coggins)
testing, rabies vaccination, or any other activity involving official
regulatory program diseases, food animal brucellosis, tuberculosis,
pseudorabies in swine, etc. Certificate holders should not be considered by anyone
to be able to work independently, or operate satellite practices as would a
fully licensed veterinarian.
These unauthorized activities
would be in violation of state or federal laws, and could make supervising
veterinarians and temporary permit certificate holders subject to disciplinary
action by the North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board.
Temporary permit
certificates are issued by mailed, with a letter to the primary supervising
veterinarian once the applicant's file has been completed.
