Corporations -> FAQs

  1. Am I required to form a corporation?
    No, corporation and practice creation are two separate processes. You can have both a corporation and a practice, or a practice, or a corporation. For example, relief vets commonly form only corporations for tax purposes. However, single vets running a small mobile practice or small practice often work as sole proprietors without forming a professional corporation. Often when practices are owned by multiple veterinarians, the owners will form a PLLC for liability reasons. All of these can be owned ONLY by a veterinarian.
  2. Do I require an inspection?
    Maybe, corporations alone do not require inspections. However, if your corporation is associated with a practice, your practice does require inspection. Failure to obtain inspection from the Board in any case could be a violation of the North Carolina Veterinary Practice Act.
  3. Does my corporation name have to match my practice name?
    No, corporation names do not have to follow the naming regulations for practices. Many organizations choose to have matching names to avoid the need for filing a DBA (Doing Business As) with their county register of deeds.
  4. What do I need to do to keep my corporation active?
    All corporations must be renewed each year in December.
  5. How long will it take to get my Letter of Certification?
    Allow two (2) days for your paperwork to reach our office, two (2) days for processing, and two (2) days for it to reach you before calling.
  6. I am applying for both a practice name and a corporation, what do I do?
    You may cross-reference each on the appropriate forms with a note that you are in the approval process for a practice name and/or corporation.
